While many media outlets have been making money hand over fist with every tidbit of valid and unsubstantiated information that arises from the Chris Brown and Rihanna (alleged) domestic violence story, one company has taken things to a new—and previously unforeseen—level. The world’s largest online betting site, Bookmaker.com recently announced that it had seen a spike in traffic.
The reason for the increase? Wagers on whether or not Chris Brown will go to jail.
Currently, the odds are in favor of the R&B singer doing hard time. Users of the site stand to win $2.35 back for every dollar wagered if Brown finds himself behind bars. Users who believe Brown will remain a free man will win $1.12 for every dollar wagered.
Odds were slightly altered when TMZ released an alleged LAPD photo of a beaten Rihanna.
While the subject of domestic violence is no laughing matter, Bookmaker.com CEO Mickey Richardson says the decision to offer a betting line on Brown’s freedom is strictly business.
“Bookmaker.com has received 1200 inquiries per day since the pictures were released on an entertainment website. We don’t play politics, but have consistently had significant interest on entertainment bets, and not surprisingly as this received major media coverage bettors responded,” Richardson told BET via his publicist.
“We have tens of thousands of dollars bet on whether Chris Brown ends up in jail or not.”
