If a songwriter links up with the right rapper or artist, he/she could end up in a very lucrative position and launch his career into the stratosphere. Dolly Parton once joked that Whitney Houston made her so much money for the song “I Will Always Love You” that she was able to buy wigs of every description for several years.
Rap and hip hop producer, Ne-Yo is another songwriter that has gained notoriety for his songwriting as well as his singing. He has written Rihanna’s top ten hit “Unfaithful” and number one hit “Take a Bow”. In addition, he has also written songs for Celine Dion, Britney Spears, Whitney Houston and Enrique Iglesias.
Songwriters need to network just as any other business person has to meet the movers and shakers and find collaborations because a lot of songs have co-writers. It’s also helpful to find a local group of songwriters and join the organization to liaise and benefit from industry critique or feedback on your songwriting skills.
Some organizations have songwriting classes that are taught by hit songwriters and peer-to-peer songwriting critique nights. In addition, some have books that you can borrow and monthly newsletters that they send out to members with requests for songs that they receive from their music industry connections.
Songwriting is no different to any other aspect of the music business. It requires work to hone your skills and time to develop as competent and respectable. If you live on the west coast, you can also benefit from the performance opportunities that organizations like West Coast Songwriters offer its members. They have some nine performance events a month from Sacramento to Hollywood and one-off events like the Palo Alto Promenade of Film and Music.
So, it’s in your interest to find musicians’ networks to be an active participant as you work towards being a self-contained artist in this new social media environment.

I heard that Dolly Parton makes more money from her songwriting than from the songs she has sung. I doubt that cause she’s a country singer and that a very popular genre for most people. It seems alot of songwriters become singers after writing songs for famous performers.
