Nowadays, most indie rap artists know the word is that it’s a DIY environment because a lot of major labels want to know that you have a solid work ethic and a viable commodity. In other words, you have to invest considerable sums of money in yourself before a record label will feel that you deserve their hard earn dollars. You also have to engage your hip hop fans and get them involved in your developmental process.
Be aware that all the music industry vultures are cognizant of this too and they develop all the right sales pitches to sell indie artists and small indie record labels what they know they want to hear and a good 90% of these people have no more knowledge than you could research and get on the Internet yourself for free.
The lesson is don’t be lazy, don’t rely solely on others, don’t believe the hype, do your own research to find credible people and ask questions, check references to confirm that they have done what they are saying that they can do. It is customary for some of these bottom feeders to name drop to impress you that they know what they are talking about. Look past the name-dropping and check for real rap artists that they have worked with and accomplished a result for – watch ONLY results.
Remember that empty vessels make the most noise, so it’s buyer beware! A lot of rappers and hip hop and rap music labels can probably attest to this but may not want to be upfront about it. The music business is hard work and there are no short cuts, you have to put in the time and invest the money in yourself to make it happen.
