According the biogRaphy on the Gary website, Jackson was born to a working class family on August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana. His father, Joseph Jackson had been a guitarist but he put his musical aspirations aside to provide for his family. He believed his sons had talent so he molded them into a musical group in the early 1960's.
The musical group initially consisted of the older brothers: Tito, Jermaine and Jackie. Michael joined his brothers when he was five and the youngster emerged as the lead singer for the group. His older brother Marlon joined the group and it evolved into the Jackson 5.
